Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast - A timeless classic for a reason
My second time reading A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway. You can almost feel his “energy” (for the lack of a better word), both ends of the spectrum in a way, when you read this book. Nothing but praise and a ton of empathy for the master of language.
Empathy because “...his façade was a defense against the instability stirring within.”

'Days of Reading' by Marcel Proust - A Short Non-Fiction for Every Reader

A book that got me out of a reading slump. It's a classic that definitely complements what Marcel Proust is so famously known for. His essays are thought-provoking and easy to read for any kind of reader. I'm so glad I decided to pick this one up on a whim! 9 Films with Disturbing Characters - You Have to Watch These!!

I know these aren’t book recommendations, although some of them are based on books (just brilliant book to film adaptations!). Some of my favorite films of course; only the first few of the many that introduced me to world cinema. And that have also made me a BETTER READER. Watching great films has helped me vividly imagine scenes while I’m reading. The way I understand the pace of different na...
Trail of Blood Manga & the Philosophy of Emil Cioran (existence is torment)

Reading the Romanian philosopher Emil Cioran (specifically his 'The Trouble With Being Born' and 'A Short History of Decay') at the same time I decided to read Trail of Blood was such great timing! Both works evoke horrors (and truths) like you’ve never imagined before. The Trail of Blood manga is about a deeply disturbed bond between mother and son. It’s unsettling and a powerful portrayal of ...

Always wanted to read No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai and then when I finally got to it, I ended up reading more of his works. My personal favorite (after No Longer Human of course) is The Setting Sun, the second half of which made me look at ALL his characters through an entirely different perspective. Although it's very tough to rate his books because they all feel so deeply autobiographical. ...

It’s often the most enjoyable books that become the most challenging to talk about. These are the best books I read in 2023 and, later on in the video, I mention some books that I am excited to read in 2024 (really psyched about the first one). My favourites of 2023 (in no particular ranking order): 1. Marcel Proust's Swann’s Way: amzn.to/3xgbiXb 2. Hermann Melville's Moby Dick: amzn.to/47jMTzu...

I absolutely love your videos talking about this book, and the broader theme many male writers have: men not feeling like humans, but instead ghosts, animals, The Bachelor, The Outcast ect. I like that these books reckon with the depressing nature of life, what frustrates me is how seldom these writers are able to differentiate between truth and deception in their self-perception and perception of others and the world. Okay you don´t feel human, but has it occured to you that you have been sold a false and limited concept of what a human is? Reckoning with the absurd, that culturally and socially we are all taken for a ride when it comes to the understandings we get, is hard, scary and depressing enough. I find it tiring how so many suffer from that which is false. Like they started engaging with the mystical, started stripping away veneers but just stayed there. There´s little to no ego dissolution, and they never - this includes Dazai - seem to ever attempt to take women out of the 2-3 categories they place them in and realize they too are human-not-human. And this last part; when one is not able to recognize the complexity and similarities of the other, they themselves never really stood a chance.

this was so beautifully put. i just finished rereading this and you really put a lot of what i’ve felt abt this book into words better than i ever could. i feel like this is really a work that can’t be summarized or encapsulated because like you said, there isn’t a wasteful word in the story at all.

I have finally finished reading the series. It was quite a downer. I have also read an interview with Inio Asano after it, so I have some thoughts. SPOILERS: According to the author, the whole cult plotline was real and they have actually saved the world through their sacrifice. Also the black dot is portrayed as the God character. This suggests that it's actually a horror manga and when Punpun says the prayer, he actually summons metaphysical evil. The series is actually about metaphysical evil corrupting an innocent idealistic kid. It's worth remembering that Punpun's uncle learns the prayer from an extremely depraved teenager. It seems that some of the bizarre acts of depravity happening in the manga, particularly most of those committed by Punpun are a result of intervention of supernatural evil, not merely trauma and mental illness.
